SCAS Newsletter - May 2025

With great joy, we share our first newsletter for 2025. We thank the Lord for a truly blessed year so far, filled with incredible opportunities to serve others in and through sport. Here are some of the highlights from our ministry over the past few months.

KEARSNEY EASTER RUGBY FESTIVAL

From 17–21 April 2025, SCAS had the privilege of once again serving at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival. Our team of 18 dedicated volunteers (chaperones) came from across South Africa to serve 14 teams, which included 12 high schools and 2 primary schools. This year’s tournament welcomed new teams, bringing fresh energy and showcasing an exciting, dynamic style of rugby. The addition of these new teams allowed us to expand our influence and gave us the chance to share about our ministry.

Our chaperones took care of practical needs, helped ensure smooth operations, and most importantly, built meaningful relationships with the players, coaches and team managers. At the Good Friday and Easter Sunday Church Services, our team led worship, shared personal testimonies, and read Scripture. Throughout the tournament, they also engaged in Bible studies and Gospel conversations with their teams.

MINISTRY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Every week, we engage with learners, coaches, and athletes through ongoing sports ministry and outreach initiatives. These include:

  • Aitsa! After Care Centre – Soccer and trail running coaching
  • Calling Academy – Connect groups and soccer coaching
  • Huddle Stellenbosch High School – For athletes from all grades
  • Markotter indoor Soccer – Five-a-side soccer coaching and refereeing
  • HEY Schools Ministry – Outreach program for Grade 7 learners in four primary schools
  • South African Championships for the Physical Disabled in Gqeberha – Serving athletes and coaches and doing Bible Studies
  • All Ability South African Surfing Championships in Durban

CAMPS

So far this year, we have hosted 23 camps and events at Die Eiland, welcoming schools, churches, and youth groups. Our staff and chaperones facilitated six of these camps. The facilitation included team building, life orientation, Gospel presentations, and leading them to discover their true identity,

These camps offer invaluable moments of growth, fellowship, and spiritual encouragement for all involved.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

We have been actively involved in six training initiatives this year, equipping individuals and communities through a variety of programs:

  • Whole Life Coaching – Sessions for coaches held once a month at Beautiful Gate Centre
  • Life Orientation – Weekly program at Cloetesville Primary School, where the lessons focus on teambuilding
  • Identity Workshops – Offered to various church and school groups at Die Eiland, as well as to learners and staff at schools throughout South Africa
  • All Ability Workshops – Conducted in conjunction with Steve Jones from FCA in the Western Cape, Durban, and Madagascar
  • Additional Training Support – For the Usiko Community Project (Stellenbosch) and Waterval Youth Camp

UPCOMING

GLOBAL IMPACT 2025
In June, we are excited to host another group of American and African students for Global Impact 2025. This month-long program focuses on training young leaders in sports ministry, equipping them to have a lasting influence in their communities.

U/18 CRAVENWEEK
We’re looking forward to being part of the prestigious U/18 Craven Week Rugby Tournament, which will take place this year in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. It’s an excellent opportunity to serve and minister to coaches and the next generation of talented rugby players from across the country.
